What is an HOA architectural request form?
An HOA architectural request form, often called an ARC or ACC request, is how a homeowner asks for approval before changing the outside of their home. Common projects include paint colors, fences, landscaping, roofs, patios, and solar panels.
A complete form saves everyone time. When owners include drawings, materials, and colors up front, the committee can decide at the first review instead of going back and forth for missing details.
What to include
- Owner contact information and property address
- Project type and a detailed description
- Materials, colors, and dimensions
- Contractor information and estimated dates
- A checklist of required attachments
- An owner acknowledgement and signature
- A committee section for the decision and conditions

Tips for using this template
Link the form to your architectural guidelines so owners know what’s likely to be approved.
A site plan and color samples answer most committee questions before they’re asked.
Many governing documents set a deadline for the committee to respond. Track the date each request is received.
Send every decision, including conditions or reasons for denial, in writing and keep a copy with the property record.
Frequently asked questions
What projects need HOA architectural approval?
Most exterior changes do, such as paint colors, fences, landscaping, roofing, windows and doors, patios, additions, and solar panels. Your architectural guidelines list exactly what requires approval.
How long does the ARC have to respond?
Your governing documents usually set the review period, often 30 to 45 days. Some documents say a request is approved automatically if the committee doesn’t respond in time.
Can an HOA deny solar panels?
Many states have solar access laws that limit how much an HOA can restrict solar installations, though reasonable placement rules may still apply. Check your state’s law.
